Laser Roadblock

For the past several weeks Zachary's doctors have been tracking an issue with the development of his eyes called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Eyes are one of the last organs to develop in the womb and normally finish maturing after birth. Preemies, especially those who receive oxygen with their breathing support, often have issues with the arteries in their eyes growing in an unorganized way that can cause scarring or retinal detachment. In most cases ROP self-resolves, but sometimes treatment is needed to try to prevent or lessen the likelihood of long term issues with vision.

Zachary's issues are moderate and in the periphery of his eyes and his doctors were debating whether to treat him now or watch him for a another week or so. Since he is so close to discharge, they decided to do laser surgery today instead of having to readmit him in the future.

It was disheartening to see him back in an incubator with an IV and breathing support, but the doctors say he did very well during the surgery and is already back to breathing in his own. We are hoping he will wake up hungry and start breastfeeding soon.

Unfortunately this also means that they have reset the countdown, so today is day zero.
